Rain Harvester
In the UK we have cheap clean water and under 25% of homes are metered this has made us complacent about our water consumption. In the Environment Agency report October 2008 we are warned that Britains rivers that provide 70% of our water will drop by 10-15% in volume in the next 40 years. We as householders will need to reduce our consumption by a third and protect and conserve our precious reserves.
Average daily water usage within the home
- Bath 100 litres
- Shower 33-100 litres
- Daily toilet flushing 50 litres
- Dishwasher 25-60 litres
- Washing load 70-120 litres
With toilets and washing machines using betweeen 30 to 40 % of our water which is of drinking quailty, it makes perfect sense to harvest rainwater instead of mains water for this purpose.
Rainwater harvesting is a simple method of collecting the rain water which falls onto your roof, bringing it to a central point via the guttering and storing it in an underground tank until it is required for use. This water is then filtered on entery to the storage tank, this can then be pumped to the point of use thus reducing the amount of water entering the storm-water management system and thereby helping to reduce flood risk.
